Read more intentionally and then reflect.” I think most business leaders and scholars agree that we need to continue to learn on a daily basis, and part of that is usually through reading. The piece of the learning process that most people forget is reflection. The trick is to intentionally choose reading that is meaningful to your current priorities and intentions, and then take the time to reflect on that through discussions with peers, journaling, etc. I’ll be honest that as a librarian, I felt offended by the title of this when I opened the email, since my profession struggles to provide equal access to information to everyone in order to support our democracy, and promoting reading is a fundamental piece of our values . However, as I listened, I understood better what your point was, and it is valid. I am going to look at my professional reading/listening list and whittle it down based on my current priorities. I do believe your title could have been a bit more nuanced and not as provacative. All that said, I enjoy your weekly email recordings, and often get a nugget of gold out of them. And we do have your book available to borrow in our library 🙂 Focuswise on 2019-03-06 at 13:22 Thanks Lori—I very much appreciate your re-work of the title, and thoroughly agree with your stance on the point and purpose of reading! I will admit that there was a small intention to be provocative in the hopes of engaging more people with the ultimate message. Sometimes when we try to jam all of the necessary learning into a single headline, we actually lose the opportunity to teach. Does that ring true to you? Michael McVety on 2019-03-05 at 07:27 Great work Curt. Your topic of reading less and think more about it is correct. People today are bombarded with all kinds of stimulation so reflecting on your life or reading has become one of the many lost arts. People today often have difficulty having a discussion in part because they have never thought about some ideas outside of a “surface-level” thinking or a quick glance. Keep up the good work. Focuswise on 2019-03-06 at 13:23 Thanks Michael! I agree. I hope that more take the time to sink below the surface and learn a little more deeply.
